Hello Everybody!

Our first official meeting is happening today! We are going to meet then the 1000 Building, in the Boardroom, from 10:30 to 12:30. We need fresh project ideas for this year. We also have a lot of topics that some of our current members, and our advisor Jamie, want us to talk about.

On our first meeting will work on the following:

- What events do we want this quarter for Project Pride?

- Do we need to meet at a different time?

- Talk about the bullying that has lead to more gay teen suicide lately.

- Open the floor for questions, comments and concerns.

Mid Summer Club News

We are meeting at Carkeek Park on Sunday August 15- just for the queer fun of it.* Bring your frisbee, your sun blocker, your rainbow beach blanket, your friends, oh & don't forget the dogs (hot dogs) to throw on the grill. This will be a potluck picnic. We will meet at the Salmon Slide at 12 noon.

Carkeek Park is in North Seattle, not far from SCC. Directions by bus are: Routes #28 (on NW 100th Place or NW 105th Street) and #75 (from Holman Road at the QFC) at its SE corner.

Directions by car are: From I-5
Take Exit 173 to Northgate Way and turn west
Cross Meridian
Northgate Way becomes NW 105th Street
Cross Aurora Ave. N (Highway 99)
Turn right on Greenwood Ave N.
Turn left on NW 110th St (look for the crosswalk lights above the street).
After 6 blocks, NW 110th Street becomes NW Carkeek Park Rd
NW Carkeek Park Rd. winds down into the valley for 1/2 mile to the park entrance.

We've had some awesome talent come out of our club in recent past.
Now its time to show Prez Ramiro our support as he vies for a schollarship by presenting his musical talent. By visiting this link, you can hear his music & cast your vote. Summer Quarter & Pride Parade Plans

Welcome to Summer Quarter! Our club meetings will resume in the Fall Quarter. Until then, please reach out & stay close to our Pride Friends in other ways during this quarter. At the end of this very week, on Sunday, June 27, we will be representing our club & Shoreline Community College as we march in the Seattle Pride Parade. All persons in support of our club & the GLBTQ community at large are welcome to show up, support our pride, & to attend the Parade.

Seattle Pride Parade's theme this year is "Over the Rainbow." As a club, we have already made our awesome banner & other signs (hence the pictures.) We have also decided as a club to each be one rainbow color: Wilem will be Red, Sam', Orange, Ramiro, Yellow, Paul, Green, Heather, Purple, & our Proud Teacher, Dr. Mimi Harvey will be Pink. We still need a Blue Volunteer.

For those who submitted authorization papers to participate in the parade (this would have been done through a club meeting or with one of our officers), please know this Pride Parade Plan:

1) 8:00 AM on the morning of, at about across the street from the North Gate Bus Mall Transit Center is North Seattle Community College with a courtyard, called Thornton Place. Meet at Thornton Place (334 NE Thornton Place, Seattle). Allowing a short wait period for us to show up at this meeting place, we will enjoy refreshments (Ramiro is bringing fruit & donuts) & get pepped up for the day.

2) Together we will take Bus 41 downtown to Pioneer Square. If you can, bring up to $5 cash for round trip bus fare if you don’t have a bus pass/otherwise, we will just take care of each other. Together we will haul our parade essentials.

3) From downtown, we will walk together to the corner of 4th & James Street. That’s our reserved space.

For those who are not actually marching, you may join us in any of the above plans as well and/or find a good viewing point to cheer us on. Our march will start at roughly 11 am, however we are expected to arrive early- & besides, this will give us time to just have fun during the show before the parade.

Prez Ramiro would like us to keep these ideas in mind:

· Parking is available at the Northgate Transit Center. Do not drive down there. You will not be able to get in, traffic will be awful and you will have to pay a lot of money for parking that is really far away.

· Bring water. We are hoping for a hot sunny day, we are doing a lot of walking. Bring some food (trail mix?) It will likely rain though, so bring a rainbow umbrella.

· Parade lasts about two hours. To be on the safe side plan to be there until 2pm.

· At the end of the parade, we will officially be off of school time/chaperone status, but hopefully kinda sticking together.

· After the parade we will put stuff away and enjoy the other events. There has been talk to meet up at the Fountain for a gay swim.

· If you have any questions, please contact Prez Ramiro or any of our officers. We are active on FaceBook, Twitter, Cell Phone/Email, & Skype. Before the event, you can also ask questions in the Student Leadership Center, room 9301 of the PUB- Lisa & Jamie are especially helpful.

Friday, June 4 was our Over the Rainbow Party & as you can see from this picture at left, we had some wild partiers workin' it too some real groovy music!

Sunday, June 6 was our campus Graduation Ceremony, as you can see from this picture at left, Club Advisor Jamie is celebrating with Graduate Sam'!

Sam' says.. "I remember what I've told graduates of the past... once a member/always a member & with that, I will carry our club vision of pride out into the real world while staying true to the club as an alumni member."

Congratulations are also in order for Ariaunna, Ash, & Izzy.

The four of us at left- as your officers will be meeting regularly during June to prepare for the Pride Parade that we are participating & marching in as a club. Our first get together will likely be this weekend sometime, at Sam's place with potluck lunch, but that is TBA. All club members & alumni are welcome to join in for lunch & parade projects- no marching required. Aside from that, look for our official club meetings to start up again in the Fall quarter- until then, our blog entries may be infrequent.

We enjoyed watching "Boys Don't Cry" this Friday (thanks Heather!). Next Friday we will be preparing for the Pride Parade! Help us make signs and banners so we can be ready to march down the parade. Sam' will be running this meeting.

Don't forget on June 4th we have our "Over The Rainbow Graduation Party". It's gonna be a blast! We will have games, music, condoms and food! Show up and also learn about the gay community! It's a free event, it's on a Friday and you get to listen to disco, why wouldn't you come?

Club Notes, May 14-May 20

This Friday we will meet in the same place, same time for a showing & discussion of the movie, "Boys Don't Cry" (thank you to our PR Person for it!)

This next weekend is the 2nd & last chance for a great campus theatre production that our club Prez Ramiro has a leading role in. A couple of us have already gone to it- & can attest that it is awesome! Good adult humor with excellent musical talent.

The moral of the play is that anything can happen in the woods- which I believe now that I've seen Ramiro play his part of chasing Cinderella. Grab a club friend or a hot date & head over to the showing: Thurs-Sat (May 20-22), 7:30 pm nightly in the campus theatre.

As most of you know Sam' is leaving Project Pride as an official member at the end of this quarter. However she is not leaving us for good, as she plans to be there to support the club as an alumni.

With that said, don't forget that we hare showing a movie on Friday, May 21st at 1pm in the game room. We will be showing Boys Don't Cry.

We have updates on the Pride Parade. We will be marching this year with the company of Mimi Harvey. Don't forget to come on May 28th to help Sam' make some awesome signs and banners. We will be marching on June 27th. More details on that to come.

Our Over The Rainbow Graduation Party is coming up and we need games and performers. This is going to be our biggest on campus event we host this year so spread the word and bring some friends. We will be selling Pizza and cookies to generate some money for the Pride Parade.

Meeting Notes Friday April 30, Week of May 2-9

Friday we talked about this year's Pride Parade & decided that in May we will make a banner of our club name & school to carry when we march. We would also like for each of us to wear one solid rainbow color- like if you choose pink, then everything you wear is to be pink. But those were ideas & of course, if you forget the rainbow colors, you can still march. We are looking forward to the parade. We also discussed our end of the quarter party....

Mark your calendar for Friday, June 4 @ 1pm in the PUB Quiet Dining Room. We are starting to pass out personal invitations for this party- everyone is welcome, even Mom & Dad. This party is to be a celebration for our club members who have been graduating this year as well as to congradulate club members who are finishing this year of school to move on to another year of school. We have several alumni members who have recently graduated & if you are reading this, we hope you will take this time to celebrate your success with pride.

Next Friday, May 7, usual club time & place, we will have our quarterly Gay Bingo. Rumor has it that we will have a drag queen in our presence for this gay game day. See you Friday at 12:30 in Room 9103 of the PUB.

As we prepare for mid-terms, remember we have the best place on campus to take a much needed break from the norms of the day...that's on Fridays at 12:30 in Room 9103 of the PUB for Project Pride. Join in.

This Friday (the 30th), we will have open discussion of current events, of life in general, & well, its on our agenda for this meeting to come up with some invitations for our End of the Quarter End of the Rainbow Party, so if you have ideas or the like, bring 'em. If we are a small group, we may go upstairs to the SLC to use the computers for graphic designed invitations. Together we'll decide when the day is here.

Until then, go out on campus, be proud & loud of who you are, help open those closet doors & drag your friends & study buddies & queer allys into the club, kickin' & screamin' if you have too.

Meeting Notes Friday April 16

We started our club meeting with a few minutes of talking about our club's activities for the quarter.

Our P.R. Officer, Heather also gave a report, sharing with us some heightened international news to be aware of- the increasingly anti-gay hate crimes happening in African countries. Because our club is small in comparison to the country of Africa the part that we can do is to become aware of the problem and to share this awareness with others, to talk about it, to learn all we can about the problem and to become aware of causes to individually be a part of to combat this hatred.

We also had open discussion of National Day of Silence, April 16, and its meaning. In summary, its due time for us to come out of the closet & not be silent.

The activity part of our club meeting was spent with finger paint & glitter & colored markers to create Pride Art for us to use at our next couple of club activities.

This Tuesday, April 20, we will meet in the court-yard at 12:30 to help Prez Ramiro & P.R. Officer Heather with an informational booth to share the word of Project Pride GSA.

Spring will be a great quarter: We spent our first club meeting talking about our club plans for the Pride Parade.

We also took a brief tour of the Student Leadership Center to learn about our available resources as a club to include computer & color printer use, our own club mail box, access to treasury club monies, & free condoms. “Grape flavored condoms too”, says our Prez Ramiro .

Congratulations to our new club officers as we look forward to your awesome ideas in planning our club table at the soon upcoming Club Expo! Generally, Club Expo is the time that clubs campus -wide come together in the cafeteria, each with their own table to display what the club has done or accomplished during the prior 2 or 3 quarters & what they plan on doing during Spring Quarter. It’s a time to not only display our table but to also check out other clubs & become club friendly with everyone.

This year’s Expo will likely be this month, April- we’ll let our officers find out just when & inform us at this next club meeting. It will be awesome to gain new Project Pride Club Members & new allied friends & for our class-mates to come out of the closet.

Attention Project Pride Members:

Project Pride Club is changing it's name to Project Pride Gay Straight Alliance. We are also signing a new constitution and choosing our new officers this Sunday (March 21st). The following positions are available:

Secretary: In charge of taking notes at meetings and keeping our blog up to date. This person also needs to be aware of current events that can be shared through our blog.

Treasurer: Manage our budget and handle paperwork necessary to use it. Creates budgets for events that we organize through the quarter.

Public Relations: In charge advertising through flyers and other media. Communicates questions from members to vice-president or president.

Vice-President: In charge of assisting the club president with various activities and taking over if the club president is not available.

President: Oversees all aspects of the club and manages our e-mail, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Spring Quarter Updates:

Project Pride will meet on Fridays at 12:30pm in room 9103 (Game Room) starting April 2nd.

We need your input to come up with more activities for our members. Please bring your suggestions to us.

Our club is leaving this week with a closing of Winter Quarter. We will officially be on Spring Break until our next club meeting, happening likely April 2 (a Friday.) Please, please have a safe Spring Break, as Project Pride Club Members, we care about each other & our campus community & our LGBTQ&A community at large. Lets have fun this break but not fall into situations of victimization as sadly happened to 2 of our campus class-mates a year ago Spring. While our hearts went out to them at that time, they are not forgotten as we move forward to a new Spring.

We will be starting next quarter with our weekly meetings tentatively planned for Fridays, mid day. Again, this is tentative- its not too late to get your oppinion on this to a club officer. Also, if you would like to serve the club in a support position to Josef or Ramiro, let us know. Sam' (me, writing this now, the blogger-) is looking for a clubby to train in the weekly blog postings. If you would like to help out in that capacity & have a sincere passion for being reliable on a regualar basis, weekly, then let us know. I (Sam') need to eventually retire from this blog job so if you wanna intern, speak up.

Lets also remember our greater community as Spring Flings & Proms are now happening. Fella Club Member, Jesse would like to comment on a current news story with her personal sharing to us:

The synopsis is the Mississippi school district cancelled the entire prom when a lesbian senior student chose to take her girlfriend with her, and she would be wearing a tuxedo. She has faced harassment from other students over this (one of them actually saying "thanks for ruining my senior year.”)
Civil right groups (ACLU and GLSEN) have advocated on her behalf and have said it violates her civil rights and her freedom of expression. There may be a compromise of a privately held prom but I do not know much about the school district or the community, although she does mention it's very conservative and these are the folks with money.... hmm...

I would like to share my experience with taking my girlfriend to the senior prom, I went to Edmonds Woodway High School and graduated 2006.

We both chose to wear dresses because we weren't out to our parents, and we also said that we were going as friends to find dates there. Of course we were going as a couple, we were not out to our parents and thus didn't want this to slip.
Anyways, the reactions to us going as a couple were remarkably normal... it could be that a few years before some same sex couples we knew went and while it raised eyebrows when they went... but it was like people have gotten over it by the time we went.
Nobody teased or made fun of us when we kissed or hugged or danced... and we even got our prom photos taken and a professional photographer, unrelated to the school or anything, didn't even care.
It was a great night and my fondest memory of her.

Anyways, it totally burns me that the teen here, Constance McMillian, got the opposite treatment. It's really not fair at all that would could have been a really fun and memorable night of her life got taken away, and that she's also been punished by other students as well. She deserves to have the same options and fair treatments as other teens. My hopes are that this gets resolved in a civil manner and she, as well as her fellow students, still get a chance to attend a prom they've been looking forward to.

Just felt like sharing because this article brought up some strong feelings for me. (-Jesse)

As Winter Quarter comes to an end, Spring Quarter will have room for anyone that wants to help out the club by serving in an officer capacity in support of & collaboration with Josef & Ramiro. If interested, please check in with one of these 2 awesome guys!

Club Member Jesse is looking for anyone who would like to join her as she gets involved in the 32^nd District Caucus with a voice to represent the LGBT community. The minimum statewide goals of participation at the 2010 State Convention set by the Washington State Democrats include: 4% African American, 8% Hispanic/Latino, 3% Enrolled Native Americans,8% Asian/Pacific Islanders, 3% Persons with Disabilities, 7% LGBT, & 3% Youth (Age 17-24).More information about the Caucus can be found at – http://www.32democrats.org/

Our meeting time was spent revamping the games for game day- which we will now be co-hosting with the Gaming Club (with Jonah as their Club President) - tentatively scheduled for the end of February & postponed from our first intended day of next week. We also completed and posted club flyers- just look for the brightly colored posters on your favorite posting boards around campus, well, mainly just the hot spots on campus.

We are also in the planning stages of a Seattle Gay History Presentation, likely in February. If you would like to contribute to the research of or presentation of this club sponsored campus event, please let our officers know.

This week, we will meet on Tuesday at 12:30 in room 9301- that’s the top floor of the PUB, in the Student Leadership Center. If you haven’t seen your friends in awhile, then this would be a good time to stop in.

I will close this blog entry by saying Congratulations to Portugal, who on January 8 passed a marriage equality bill, granting same gendered couples the right to marriage- but sadly, without the right to parenthood by adoption.

We had our weekly meeting with a good turn out & plans made for a gay game day…This upcoming Event to look forward to is happening Thursday, January 28 at 3 to 5 pm. We’ll likely be meeting in the game room- on the first floor of the PUB, across from the book-store, but that is yet to be confirmed so stay in touch with us so you don’t miss out.

This Thursday, January 21 we will meet in the Student Leadership Center, room 9301 to make the play-gay-version of the Monopoly Board Game.

On another note, it seems that our Campus Quarterly Club Kick-off is being postponed for a while. This means that we have some leeway time to get ready for the big event. This also means that we need to work especially hard, individually & collectively, at getting the word out that our club exists.

While every other week our club has an “officer meeting”, this is really a planning session for club events on the alternating weeks. Our officer meeting, our events, & other club events, or that is anything with our Project Pride Club Name attached, is open to you & everyone! We had a question come in to our email about that, so wanted to be sure to answer it.

Our club met twice last week to say hello to each other & to begin actively planning our soon upcoming participation in the campus Club Kick-Off. Our second meeting resulted in the above pictured work for a project in progress.

Member Jesse shared with us an Uganda news story that she has been following, saying "Among some what the bills proposes is massive programs to "cure" homosexuality, trials and imprisonment, and even execution! Also, it has been recently suggested Ugandan citizens can be extradited internationally to be put on trial for suspected homosexuality (meaning anywhere in the world -- America, France, Brazil - anywhere - they can be dragged back against their will to be put on a trial which in no means could ever be fair.)" Hi all, we had our final Fall Quarter club meeting with an open mic session. Awesome!

We have lots of talent in our club. Among us, Ramiro played his guitar, but had a tough time with special requests. Sam' shared her queer humor for everyone to hear- including those outside of the club room & in the foyer & of which were not quite sure whether to laugh or cry.

Jesse shared her passionate journey thus far, as she is quite an author & artist-we can say we knew her before she became famous.

Question of the day: Is it a breeder? Or is it gay?

At the start of the club meeting, we took a verbal & written survey of when it would be best to meet next quarter & what to do when we meet.

Its not too late to get your vote or oppinion in- just shoot us an email. Also, look forward to an email from Officer Ramiro asking for your say in this. All replies will be welcomed because we are a club only because you are a part of the club...we need to know when you want to meet & what you want to do with our meeting time (instead of listening to drama queen whining from those who neglect to share their input.)

Tuesday we shared in a movie, A Home at the End of the World, co-starring Sissy Spacek. It was a movie about family &

creating a family with unconventional rules which sparked discussion at its end.

This Tuesday, December 1 is our final Fall Quarter Meeting- a Party Play Gay Day. As discussed at our officer’s meeting with a few club members input to club officers, we have several things planned for the hour. Open Mic, for one- & other fun & campy stuff.

Of importance, we will be gathering members' input by the use of an anonymous survey, so to get a group consensous of what worked or didn't work during Fall Quarter club time & to find out what is wanted at club level during Winter Quarter. Also, now is the time for scheduling our room reservations for Winter Quarter. Please decide among these choices & let us know your say in it: 12:30pm - 1:30pm Tuesdays

Tuesday, Nov. 24 (same time/same place)- we are excited to say that our club is hosting a Warner Bros. Movie: A Home at the End of the World, co-starring Sissy Spacek. Open to all persons, so bring a date & enjoy a good movie on us.

Tuesday, December 1- we will kick Fall Quarter out & ring in the new year by having a Party Play Gay Day. As discussed at our officer’s meeting with a few club members input to club officers, we have several things planned for the hour. More will be revealed but remember “Show & Tell” time in grade-school? Well, we’re in college now, so play-time has grown up. Please bring with you your singing voice, your stand-up comedy or talking talent, & your fun clothes- That is, open up your closet & bring with you a bag of rainbow pearls, scarves, hats, dresses, bras, & spiked pumps to share during play time.

Aside from play time, we will have a small amount of business, as we need a group consensous of when to meet next quarter. With your schedule (academic & personal) in mind, please choose among these times & let us know your say in it:

Tuesday was our quarterly gay bingo with lots of new friends & new words learned to carry us into our academic life. Prizes were won, from CDs to an allied friendly t-shirt- oh & our officer, Ramiro won a "how to book."

To note: Our officers are compiling a reference list to have available for those in need of help with basic resources, like housing or health care or the like. If you know of gay friendly options to add in to this list, let us know or see us at the officer's meeting this Tuesday, the 17th.

Our final Fall Quarter club meeting will be on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Thank you to all those who voted this past election day. On Nov. 3 Washington State voters approved Referendum 71. With this passing, our society is but one small step closer to letting go of prejudice.

After a more-than eight-year legislative battle, Congress voted last week to extend federal hate-crimes protections to LGBT victims.The U.S. Senate approved a defense-spending bill Oct. 22 to which the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hate-Crimes Prevention Act was attached, and President Obama signed the bill into law Oct. 28.The amendment honors two men both slain in 1998: Shepard, a gay college student from Wyoming, beaten and left to die tied to a fence; and Byrd, a black man who was brutally murdered by three white men.The House had approved the defense bill Oct. 8 in a 281-146 vote. The Senate approved the bill 68-29.The hate-crimes amendment expands the 1969 federal hate-crimes law to include sexual orientation, gender identity, gender and mental or physical disability; provide funding to local and state agencies to investigate hate crimes; remove the current stipulation that offenses must be committed while a victim is engaging in a federally protected activity; and provide the Justice Department greater jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute hate crimes.

Meeting Notes, Oct. 13, Week of Oct. 12-16

With our club meeting time, we finalized our art work for the Club Kick-Off table, which just a few of us participated in on Wednesday. There were many clubs present at the Club Kick-Off Event with our club table represented by Ramiro on behalf of our club.

We had a big rainbow umbrella with campy music playing so people could see us in the crowded room of clubs. This event gave us time to share with others about our club & to answer their questions about different issues. We also passed out guides to being a straight ally for those who weren't sure how our club relates to them. Our club advisor Jamie, while mingling & being a part of the entire event, showed his Project Pride commitment by wearing the jeweled tiara (a crown) that we made with pipe cleaners during our art time last meeting.

This coming week, our club meeting time will be in room 1103 with a showing & follow-up discussion of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Bring props for the event....& Alyse says for us to dress up for it!

Again, this is a new year with new people among the old, & new ideas. Thanks for the ideas thus far as it is great to come together as one in our values. But, remember, there wouldn't be a club if there wasn't us to be in the club, so lets participate in our ideas, OK....like we can always change our ideas if we don't want to show up for our ideas, so lets regroup if need be. Hi friends,

This past week saw us with a club meeting then at a PFLAG Presentation.Tuesday's club meeting had a very good turn-out of us as we openly discussed that we would like our club's message for this year to be about all-inclusiveness. That is, bringing the gay, straight, & otherwise all together as one common community. Big plans are already beginning for Winter quarter's Club Kick-off to share this message. For Fall quarter's Club Kick-off we spent some meeting time brainstorming with poster paper & art supplies all while listening to Ramiro's favorite music (YMCA) on the boom box.

Friday saw just a couple of us at the annual PFLAG Event with kudos to our guest speaker, Laurel who shared her personal story with us as well as informed us about State Referendum 71 to be voted on in November.

Check out the Ebb-tide news-paper that is now out for a full size artical on the Club Kick-off, including a short blurb about Project Pride Club.

Look forward to a great new year with great new Co-Presidents, Amy & Ramiro who have inspiration for activities for us. September 29's meeting included a tour of the Student Leadership Center as well as the Women's & Multicultural Center. We discussed collaboration with these people & available opportunities for Project Pride. Left the tour with free condoms in hand (for those who need or wanted them.)

Our first fall quarter meeting was of open discussion of just what our club is & what it could be, with interest in community outreach & for the soon upcoming Club Kick-off.

Congratulations to Jamie Ardeña as our new club advisor. Jamie comes to us with a long history of dedication to our Student Leadership Center (SLC, for short) as well as a strong passion for our club to be awesome.

Also from the SLC is Jeff O., who as the new Club Manager for all clubs, attended our meeting. While new to this club job, Jeff is not new to campus life or to GLBTQ issues. Both of these staff persons, Jamie & Jeff can be found upstairs in the PUB, in the SLC, room 9301.

Our next club meeting will be happening in just a couple days from now,
on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 1:30, again in room 9202 of the PUB.

We are still working out the kinks as to when is best for all of us to meet (so come knowing your schedule.) Tuesday's meeting will also focus on exploring fulfilling officer position(s), as well as to openly talk about getting involved in current campus events, namely the PFLAG Presentation & then Club Kick-Off.

If you would like to be one of our club officers, just say so...no experience needed...just an open mind & heart to keep us motivated.

Friday, October 9 starting at 11am, a PFLAG Presentation, hosted by our Women's & Multicultural Center. Lynette from the Women's Center is asking for a couple of us to help facilitate & to help celebrate National Coming Out Day for this Event.
Wednesday, October 14 from 11:30 until 2:30, Club Kick-Off, held in the main dining room of the PUB. As a quarterly event, this is the time for clubs to (as aptly titled) to kick-off. Its a time for Project Pride to represent our club & to be there when the closet door opens. Traditionally, our club has been infamous for a free condom give away. Its up to us as to what we make of it this time.

Community Events are also happening, that our recent-past-advisor-Rachel is passing on to us, with more details available at our meetings:

Come mingle and mix with seasoned leaders and activists of the GLBTQ at the Generation Q Mega Mixer. The mixer will be held at Sole Repair Shop (1001 E Pike St) after the March from 6:30 to 9:00pm. Young leaders (23 and under please) will have the opportunity to socialize, learn from, and quite possibly have a dance off with some of the community's most inspiring members in a relaxed, social environment. October 11.
Thinking Queerly: Community Workshops on LGBT Issues, October 10th 9:30am @ Seattle University
HIV/AIDS Vigil October 10th 6:30pm @ Seattle Central Cort Yard (Pine and Broadway)

For our final spring quarter meeting, we had our infamous Gay Bingo Day with the full opportunity for fun, to be ourselves, & to win Bingo Prizes.

Advisor Rachel even won at a game of Bingo, quickly snatching up the prized & queerly intimate love making squirrels. Friday saw us at the quarterly campus Club Expo, hosted by the Campus Ambassadors who presented us with a certificate of Award for being the best club table at the Expo~! Friday we had a productive meeting. It was Part 1 in preparing for Club Expo. Joy showed the gals just how to make rainbow beaded necklaces for all. Ariana & Andhi created our out & loud club poster. ("more glitter, more glitter~!") This & campy music & we're almost ready for Club Expo.
Part 2 of our art extravaganza happens next Friday. That's when we will decorate our Project Pride Club Tshirts. Between now & Friday, if you'd like to help Alyse tye-die the tshirts, please let her know.

A joint statement from Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal and Iowa House Speaker Pat Murphy on today’s Supreme Court decision:

“Thanks to today’s decision, Iowa continues to be a leader in guaranteeing all of our citizens’ equal rights.

“The court has ruled today that when two Iowans promise to share their lives together, state law will respect that commitment, regardless of whether the couple is gay or straight.

“When all is said and done, we believe the only lasting question about today’s events will be why it took us so long. It is a tough question to answer because treating everyone fairly is really a matter of Iowa common sense and Iowa common decency.

“Today, the Iowa Supreme Court has reaffirmed those Iowa values by ruling that gay and lesbian Iowans have all the same rights and responsibilities of citizenship as any other Iowan.

“Iowa has always been a leader in the area of civil rights.

“In 1839, the Iowa Supreme Court rejected slavery in a decision that found that a slave named Ralph became free when he stepped on Iowa soil, 26 years before the end of the Civil War decided the issue.

“In 1868, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that racially segregated “separate but equal” schools had no place in Iowa, 85 years before the U.S. Supreme Court reached the same decision.

This week we are counting down the days to our open Planning Session scheduled for this Friday. (Same time, same place as our meetings- it'll be during our meeting time.)

We are planning an Awareness Event on Thursday, May 21. This will be our way of commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots & its impact in shaping our society. This will also be our way of bringing awareness of minority issues, the problem of hate crimes, & the difference we can make to alleviate such crimes.

It would be awesome if other club(s) join us, also with a historical event & a minority issue to bring to campus awareness. So, help us spread the word, campus wide, that this open Planning Session is at the end of this very week.

Meeting time was also spent talking about being prepared for Club Expo, happening May 15. We will spend our meeting on May 1 creating a poster for this event. We ask that all clubbies clean out their rainbow drawer at home & haul in anything rainbow-themed so that we can shine as bright as a rainbow at Club Expo.

Our May 8 meeting will be devoted to decorating our t-shirts.
If you plan on turning in a white t-shirt, the deadline for this has been moved to May 1.
They will then be rainbow tie-died & returned to us to decorate on May 8.
Officers Sam' & Josef will additionally provide t-shirts at club expense.
So, either way, know that you will have a t-shirt to decorate at that time.

Friday, we finalized our club sign up list, to secure club monies for the next academic year- thank you to all who signed.

We'll meet again this Friday for the open Planning Session for the Awareness Event. Spread the word.

WASHINGTON — And now there are four. In the space of a week, the number of states allowing same-sex marriage has doubled, with Iowa and then Vermont joining Massachusetts and Connecticut. Here on the home front, at SCC, our club is excited to say that we have some awesome events planned:
May 15, Club Expo
May 21 (Thursday), Minority Issues Awareness Event in Commemoration of Stonewall
June 5, Gay Bingo (Ariana's favorite day.)
June 28 (Sunday), Pride Parade. Yes, we are marching as Project Pride Club of Shoreline.

We will be spending our club meetings preparing for these events & will keep you posted of the details. For now, here are some important FYIs:

Get a white t-shirt to Project Pride. Your t-shirt will be tye-died for you & then returned later in May for us to decorate. We will wear our decorated Project Pride Club t-shirts as we march in Seattle's Pride Parade.
If you haven't yet, touch base with our advisor, Rachel this week to sign our club roster. This will be turned in to the Student Leadership Center for club funding purposes.
On April 24, our meeting will be time spent to discuss the details & facilitation of our awareness event/Stonewall commemoration. We are hoping this will be in collaboration with other (minority) clubs. So pass the word on to encourage others to come to this much needed planning session.

Our first meeting of Spring Quarter was a somber one as we faced the difficult truth that two SCC students were victimized in a hate crime while on vacation out of state during our recent spring break. This included watching a taped news interview of our classmates, found at: http://www.komonews.com/news/local/41728777.html

Also to note, as soon as the news hit our local papers, us officers submitted a club statement. In our safe club environment, we came together as one in awareness and in hopes to use this quarter for building awareness, pride, and a welcoming society for all to be a part of.

Email usage: Um, it seems that we have been lax in checking our email. So, check it to keep up with our club news, okay?

Pride Parade: Because of bureaucratic logistics located in the Student Leadership Center, we will not be registering for and marching as our club in this year's Seattle Pride Parade. However, we do encourage attendance together. Bring any ideas to our upcoming meetings that would give us other possible ways for us to take part in Pride Parade.

Power of One Leadership Conference is happening the weekend of April 24 with 4 tickets available to us to attend, provided we come up with an advisor to chaperone. Lacking on this needed advisor & with a deadline to meet logistics looming over us, we concluded the meeting a little early to find such a person.

Project Pride will continue with the same Friday 12:30 time slot for our spring meetings. Check your email later this week to find out where.

We had lots of fun, listened to campy music, gained a greater vocabulary to use in our academic life, & learned how to have fun during the heated competition of screaming "BINGO!"

Today's meeting was simply an open forum discussion to move forward on planned activities:

Lunch Out will happen on the last Friday of the quarter- March 13 at club meeting time, carpooling available.

We will register our club (not as SCC, but as Project Pride Club of SCC) for Pride Parade, happening in Seattle at the end of June. Officers Josef & Sam' will handle the logistical part of it, including the $50 fee to be paid by our club funds. This year's parade is an anniversary year of the Stonewall happenings. In spring quarter, at club meeting level, we will make any banners, posters, or the like as needed.

Of note, Pride Parade 2007 was awesome with a great Project Pride turn-out. Some of us marched with Ingersoll as invited, while some of us cheered & gave support from the sidelines. For a recap of this, with pictures, see our July archive page. So, mark your calendar for the end of June for Pride Parade!

This very next Friday is our Gay Bingo Day during our club meeting hour. So you don't want to miss that!

We had a good turn out of members for a social hour of lunch (Andhi ate the most PB & Banana sandwiches) & some strange video clips that Officer Josef provided- giving us plenty of entertainment & discussion thereof.

Ok, the first video clip was about a young man coming out as gay to his teeny tiny rural farm community only to find out that he is not the only gay guy in this population of maybe 50 people, nevermind that his dad becomes a reclusive drunk over it all. The second clip was a story with a lesson to not go with strangers, because no matter how attracted you may be to the same gender- if this person is a stranger, well that person may be stranger than you may realize- making bed bugs a thing of not just theory but real time nightmares.

Ok, so we also discussed our agenda for next week, like we would like more info to run with about Pride Parade & AIDS Awareness Day & also, didn't Dekel say something about Equality Day coming up soon? We celebrated Valentine's Day a day early....Had an awesome get-together to watch the movie Frida with discussion & popcorn.

Good movie- takes place in the greater Mexico City area in the 1920s, 1930s, & later to depict the life of a famous painter named Frida.

It was another awesome meeting of just being ourselves. We are now planning to take part in an Equality March, happening during Spring Break- with the help of our advisor, Dekel. And we are still waiting on updates to further plan our club participation in Pride Parade (in June) & Aids Awareness (in October.)

For now, we are excited to say that on Friday February 13 we will meet (at 12:30) for a "bring your own popcorn" Valentine Movie with Frida.

On Friday we attended the Lunar New Year Party, hosted by our Campus Ambassadors. It was an awesome party as we had lots of fun partying & playing games with people from other clubs! A big thank you to Alyse & Josef for their dedication to the planning committee to see this party happen for us.

Friday we discussed & decided upon which movie for Valentine Movie Day. We will watch & then discuss Freda. This film is based on a true story with historical drama & romantic friendship scenes.

We also discussed & firmed up Lunch Plans- an event happening later in the quarter. And we talked about the many facets of leadership along with its dynamics of building inter-relational skills all while supporting one another in our endeavors.

I want to thank all of those who came to listen to the PFLAG speakers for National Coming Out Day, I thought it was a better turnout than expected, hopefully in the future, we can get more to come to SCC to speak on related issues, on the Halloween front, I have emailed all of you for schedule requests, and hope to hear from you soon, this week I will obtain a waiver of sorts to be able to serve candy and snacks at the party so it won't interfere with Chartwell's. I am still open to ideas for the party , I would love to have it be a costume party, I am also open to ideas for a costume for me lol. Anyways, I hope you all are having a great quarter so far.

Gretings to all the Project Pride members this quarter, new and old, I know this blog has not been updated in a while but I am determined to keep you all in the loop to all goings on with Project Pride and Project Pride related activities. First, let me just say I am extremely pleased and excited with the attendance at the meetings this past couple of weeks, I am sure this will be our best and most productive year. Just to remind all, We meet Fridays at 12:30 in room 9201 in the pub, Rachel has secured the room for the remainder of the quarter, but I will still send out reminders to club members just in case. Anyways, I hope we have a tremendous quarter and year!

Summer is ending & Fall is Beginning

Wow! It’s almost that time again- time for another great quarter of classes & for Project Pride to be active in our campus & community at large. This past academic year saw us through many times of sharing, of giving, of experiencing transition, tears, & triumphs & seeing individual club members excel at great academic aspirations. A few highlights from that year:

Guest Speakers including a PFLAG Mom in the fall, Elayne Whiley of Ingersoll, Jerimiah Rice of Student Government, & then Pastor Dan.
Quarterly movie showing, most recently Red without Blue.
Bowling extravaganza.
Holiday Toy Drive, co-partnered with the Psych Club.
Group participation with several other clubs.
Attended Queering Academics Conference at Portland State University.
Attended Seattle Pride Parade.
Ate lots (& lots) of snacks including Vegan Donuts.
Played Gay Bingo.
Made Food-Art (that was in the summer.)
Expressed our club in hands-on art posters.
Active in all quarterly Club Kick-offs.
Changed & Voted in our new constitution to provide open opportunities for our governance.
Changed & Voted in our new Club Name (We were the Rainbows before October.)

Looking forward to another awesome year, we hope to soon see new Club Officers.

And we look forward to meeting new friends as we invite all to our Club.

Andy shared about his new Student Government Job, as Club Ambassador- with the duties of facilitating Club Events, for example, National Coming Out Day is in October & so we openly discussed celebration ideas for that.

Izzy updated us on our Seattle Pride Parade plans. We will be marching with Ingersoll. Meet at 11 am at Table # 5 at the corner of Fourth Ave & Columbia in downtown Seattle. We have the theme of "The Time to be Happy is NOW!" Check your email for more details.

Spring quarter is over & Summer quarter will soon begin with Project Pride meetings on Thursdays at 12:30, same room- #9201 in the Pub, starting June 26.

Our summer will be much less active but just as full with pride. If you have anything you'd like to share- a reading, art, game, snacks, or most anything else, bring it with you to the meeting. These summer meetings are open to any club members in or out of summer classes, alumni, partners, allys, friends, study buddies, & most anyone else remotely related to campus that is in support of Project Pride.

Project Pride is marching in the Seattle Pride Parade! Izzy & I are finalizing the details, but yes, it is a go! More will be revealed later. This is happening Sunday, June 29.

This was our last Spring Quarter Meeting, as we said our good-byes to our graduating members. But, its not good-bye for long. Because all alumni are welcome to stop in anytime- we will be resuming meetings during the Summer Quarter, starting Thursday, June 26 at 12:30, room TBA.

Summer Quarter meetings will be an informal gathering to openly share,

without planned activities as this past quarter held.

We did have an awesome Spring Quarter with our Pride shining forward, full of activities that brought enlightment & awareness, both for our Project Pride Members & for our community campus at large.

What an awesomely rainbow week we had together!

Tuesday, we attended & individually participated in the Women's Words of Fire Presentation. Erin led this event while Rachel, Amelia, I & others did readings with Ariana & others listening intently.

Thursday, we attended & gave a club skit to the Social Justice Event. This was very moving with tears as Peter's friend Pastor Dan shared in our skit roles.

Friday, we welcomed our guest speaker, SCC graduate Elayne Whiley as we watched a good flick, Red without Blue. Her message enlightened us in awareness of transgendered persons, especially when in a campus community.

Saturday evening, Shorecrest GSA had their Pink Prom, open to our younger people. See Andy for the party results.

Saturday, I cleaned up our campus boards taking down last week's event flyers, leaving behind an updated Project Pride flyer.

(A couple embraces during a protest outside Congress in Bogota, Wednesday, June 20, 2007, the day after a gay rights bill was derailed at the last minute by a bloc of conservative senators. The bill, which had been endorsed by President Alvaro Uribe, would have made Colombia the first nation in Latin America to grant gay couples in long-term relationships the same rights to health insurance, inheritance and social security as heterosexual couples.)

It was another awesome meeting!

We played Gay Bingo & ate snacks.

This week we will present our skit at the Think Speak Act Event, hosted by the Social Justice Club. Meet at 12:25 in the SCC Courtyard on Thursday for this.

Then, on Friday, we meet at 12:25 in room 1104 for our SCC campus wide showing of Red without Blue Film. We will have a guest speaker, SCC Graduate, Elayne Whiley with us- so lets show up, support our speaker & watch a good flick!

We had an awesome meeting exploring, sharing, & discussing our topic of interest for the soon upcoming skit that we will present to the Social Justice Club for the "Think Speak Act Event." This past week also saw Trevor, Miguel, & Brittney at the quarterly Student Govt. Club Council Meeting, with Brittney in the running for Club Chancellor! Then on Sunday, Miguel washed cars with Shorecrest GSA, raising $200 for their Pink Prom.

Awesome meeting as we are getting ready to present a skit at the Think Speak Act Event, hosted by the Social Justice Club later this month. And, Peter is offering us a guest speaker on our behalf for this very event!

This Friday, we will work some more in preparing for this skit. And, this week, on Thursday, the 15th is our quarterly Club Council Meeting, hosted by Student Government. Miguel will attend this on behalf of our club, but it is open to anyone.

And to end the week off, next Sunday, May 18, check out Miguel as he washes cars with Shorecrest GSA! Its happening from 2 to 6 in the afternoon, on the corner of 170th & 15th, at Center for Human Services in Shoreline. This carwash is to help raise money for their soon upcoming Pink Prom. If you wanna wash cars or get your car (or bike) washed, just show up!

We set up at Club Expo on May 1 with our free candy & condoms, and free GLBTQ info, including great Project Pride flyers that Miguel created. We also had a raffle which collected survey info for us & gave away lots of nice prizes. It was a group effort to display our table & I believe we shined with rainbow colors of Project Pride! Our weekly meeting on Friday was also awesome, with part of the meeting devoted to the Social Justice Club- as their President, Johnny Legrand & a few of his members enlightened us with their soon upcoming "Think, Speak, Act" event. So, next Friday, come to our meeting with ideas to share in contribution to this event!

Friday February 18th Meeting Notes

Hey everyone,

Sam' and I are back from the Power of One Conference and we have a lot of things to share with you! As most of you may know (from the last post and for the meeting) - I have decided to step down as co-president (with Sam') of this club. But I will still be an active member and I have a lot of great ideas (at least I think so) to contribute to the club.

On Friday Sam' passed out the Project Pride brochures and we worked on the club posters for the Club Expo that will be happening on May 1st in the PUB. Sam' created really great brochures and I hope everyone received enough of them to hand out to students on the campus. If you would like to have some brochures to pass out, please e-mail Sam' at shoreline.projectpride@gmail.com.

On Friday we also shared a couple of our experiences from the Power of One conference and shared pictures from the event. Sam' also told us about the Pink Prom event for LGBT youth that will be occurring on May 31st. I don't know how involved Project Pride will be, but it would be great to collaborate on a LGBTQ project with another local organization.

Sam' and I were interviewed by the Ebbtide on Friday so look forward to our group being in the next issue! We will be meeting this upcoming Friday at 12:30 p.m., but the place is unknown! 04/11 Friday Meeting Notes

Wow. Power of One conference. During April 10-12 me (Mathew) and Sam' attended the Power of One conference at Portland State University. It was a really awesome event and Sam' and I are very thankful that we were able to bring Debbie Doepling to the conference. There were many things that were discussed during the conference and Sam' and I are working right now to apply them to the Shoreline CC campus. We are also thankful that the Women's Center at SCC is so giving to give us the opportunity to go!

I have decided to not be an officer of Project Pride anymore. Although I love working with the club, I have a lot of responsibilities on my plate and will not be able to perform a lot of the duties that this club requires as a co-president. Sam' will presume all of my duties. If you have any questions about what I am currently busy with, please e-mail me at matthewyeah@shoreline.com - I don't want this blog to be about what I am doing.

Friday 04/04/08 Meeting Notes

Our first meeting of Spring quarter was pretty awesome. We ate lots of snacks (which is becoming a reoccurring theme). We're in room 9201 for the rest of our meetings this quarter, every Friday at 11:30. That's in the PUB!

This upcoming Friday Sam' and I will be in Portland for the Power of One conference. We're both really excited to go and we will bring back a lot of information that will spearhead us through Spring quarter. While we are gone Topher and Trevor will co-chair the next meeting and the club will make posters for a sort of "club kick-off" that Shoreline is having for the new pub.

Sam' and Trevor are going to post fliers this week, if you're interested in going with them please let us know at shoreline.projectpride@gmail.com. Personally, I have a class at 11:30 on Fridays and I am extremely busy right now with a lot of projects. I haven't decided what I am going to do but whatever it is, it'll be in the interest of the club.

Ok: this upcoming Friday the 11th of April we are meeting in room 9201 at 11:30 a.m. The next meeting will be full of art, what more could you want?

March 14th Meeting Notes

Ok. Sorry this is so late to get out. March 14th was our last Winter quarter meeting. We had a good times, lots of laughs, Sam' brought a ton of snacks. Next quarter we're planning on having snacks at almost every meeting, providers rotating each time.

Sam' and I will be attending the Power of One Conference on April 10-12th in Portland. It will be an awesome experience and we're looking forward to sharing with the Shoreline campus and community what we discussed with other college students throughout the pacific northwest. A portion of Project pride's annual funds will be used for this conference. I assure you that our club's planned Spring activities will NOT be affected by our use of these funds.

We are planning (with WPDSS) to host a "Think, Speak, Act" event on the Gay Rights movement in May. More information will in the next few weeks. We are planning on forming a small committee within Project Pride to deal with the specific logistics of this event. If you'd like to be a part of the committee, please e-mail me.

So we didn't meet on Friday because we had a campus-wide showing of TransAmerica. After both showings we had a Q & A with our guest speaker Elayne. We'll talk more about this at the upcoming meeting this Friday.

This Friday will be our LAST meeting of the quarter, so be awesome and attend. You thought Winter quarter was awesome with Project Pride? That's gonna be nothing compared to this upcoming Spring quarter. We'll talk about it this upcoming Friday the 14th (scary...) in room #2946 at 12:45 p.m.

February 29th No Meeting Notes

Hey everyone - we didn't meet last Friday because we had our huge bowling extravaganza. Sam' pretty much destroyed all the competition, just like everyone expected! Here are some pictures of Andy and Sam' sporting their bowling style:

This upcoming Friday at 12:45 in room 1102 we will be showing the movie TransAmerica. We will be having a discussion following the movie! I encourage everyone to announce to their classes about the movie. I have some fliers that you can hand out to students and faculty if you are interested. We will also be showing the movie at 4:30 for the First Friday of the Month. So either at 12:45 or 4:30 (or both!), please come!

There are a number of important topics to discuss. Jessica Puckett, the president of WPDSS, e-mailed me and asked me if we would be interested in collaborating on a project called "Think, Speak, Act" for this upcoming Spring quarter. Some awesome ideas are coming together. If you have any suggestions please e-mail me at shoreline.projectpride@gmail.com. Our next (official) meeting will be March 14 at 12:45 in room #2946.

This quarter is ending too quickly to do any more events for it, but we can wrap up this quarter and plan SO MUCH MORE on the 14th. February 22nd Meeting Notes

On Friday we solidified our agenda to the end of the quarter (and a little bit beyond) and ate some awesome vegan donuts from Mighty O. Here is what is happening:

-Friday 02/29 at 3 p.m. we will be bowling at Spin Alley in Shoreline. If you want to car pool then e-mail me at shoreline.projectpride@gmail.com and we can figure out a place/time to meet. Otherwise, here are some directions:

-Friday the 7th of March we are having a campus-wide showing of TransAmerica at 12:30 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m. for Shoreline's First Friday of the Month followed by a group discussion.

-Friday the 14th of March we are (tentatively) planning on having a PFLAG Seattle Chapter- Mom come to the Shoreline campus. More details will be coming soon.

We also discussed the Oscar Party presented by the Gay City Health Project that is happening today, the 3rd Annual Spring Film Series that is happening on March 10th, the Transgender Film Festival that is happening May 9-11, a Queer Youth project (for those 13-21 ask me for details), and the Power of One Conference which is happening April 10th, 11th, and 12th.

We have a very limited number of (funding) spots available for the Power of One Conference in Portland. Four people have already confirmed their interest in going. Registration can be expensive, so please let me know ASAP if you are interested in going this year.

Ok, I hope to see you all at Spin Alley this upcoming Friday. I personally won't be bowling because of an injury, but it will be fun to see how poorly you bowl. We are not having a meeting in room 2946 this Friday. Come to Spin Alley at 3 p.m. instead.

February 15th Meeting Notes

Today we further discussed the bowling trip (on the 29th) and the showing of the movie TransAmerica (on the 7th of March). We also had a visit from Student Government pertaining to our fliers being ripped down. We have received great support from the Student Government ever since most of our fliers were ripped down and we can't think them enough. Student Advocate Jerimiah Rice printed disclaimer notices for our club and we distributed them across campus after our meeting.

While distributing the disclaimers we noticed that in the hallway for the Student Government office one of our fliers was ripped down. Two other fliers were ripped down in different areas on campus after Reily, Sam', and I had redistributed them last Tuesday. We don't know if this is some cruel joke, but we are hopefuly that with the new disclaimer people will stop breaking the law. Student Government has been notified about the redistributed fliers being ripped down.

On Friday we also had a few new members so we did introductions, voted on a new constitution, and voted Sam' and I as the official presidents of the club. Awesome! Our next meeting is on February 22nd at 12:45 p.m. in room 2946 - we are going to discuss a service project and we're going to do some "getting to know you" aka team building activities. February 8th Meeting Notes

-Tuesday (02/12) Sam, Reily, and I will be redistributing the Project Pride fliers around campus. If you would like to help we are meeting at 9:30 a.m. at the entrance to the library. We will also be stopping by our advisor's class to introduce Project Pride for about five minutes before we distribute. Let me know (shoreline.projectpride@gmail.com) if you want to help us distribute fliers because it will not take longer than an hour!

-Friday (02/29) we will be going bowling at Spin Alley at 3 p.m. so make arrangements (like asking off of work!) Bowling can be paid for by Project Pride, but you'll have to pay for extra expenses (like food). It'll be a great way for us to come together as a club outside of school - so please come!

-Friday (03/07) we are showing the movie TransAmerica at 12:30 pm and then again at 4:30 p.m. for Shoreline CC's First Friday of the Month. Please plan on being there at one of those times to watch a great movie and to support our campus events!

I sent out a MySpace bulletin saying that I will be making the Project Pride MySpace account public. I was planning on opening it up on March 1st but I think I will be opening it up sooner just so that we don't waste any time promoting the club!

Student Advocate Jerimiah Rice came to talk to our meeting about the incident regarding our fliers being ripped off the campus poster boards. Please click here for the full Ebbtide story! We have received great support from the Student Body Association and we will be working with them in the near future to bring a resolve to this (hopefully isolated) incident.

Thanks to everyone who came to the meeting on Friday. I am taking over the position of President with Sam Birran. We are simplifying the club constitution and it will be available for the club to amend by this upcoming Friday the 15th. Final discussions on club officers and responsibilities (including the constitution) will be hammered out within the first 15 minutes of our next meeting because we have too many other topics to discuss in our allotted time (so please don't be late!).

Attack on 2 men on Capitol Hill may have been hate crime
Gay slur used during beating

Brad Crelia said he used to feel safe from anti-gay attacks on Capitol Hill.

He'd moved from Spokane to Seattle just to live in the city's traditionally gay neighborhood.

But then this weekend, he'd noticed the posters in the neighborhood warning of a spate of anti-gay attacks.

And on Monday, his head was sore, and his boyfriend's nose was scraped raw and possibly broken after they were attacked about a block from their home early Sunday morning.

Crelia, 22, said he and his partner, Thomas Colonna, 27, were crossing East Olive Way and East Howell Street -- an area with two gay bars, the Crescent and the Elite -- around 2 a.m., when they heard a car peel off from a light. Racing toward them, the car swerved, and screeched to a halt.

Crelia, who was using a cane because he had broken a toe recently, said he and Colonna threw up their hands in anger as if to say "slow down." That's when the car stopped, Crelia said.

Three young men, and one man headed for Crelia.

The man grabbed Crelia's wooden cane and began hitting him in the face and kicking him. Crelia said the man used a gay slur as he beat him, and that two others grabbed Colonna, with at least one punching him in the face.

Police said witnesses chased the men back into their car, and Crelia said they drove toward the northbound Interstate 5 onramp. One witness got the car's license plate number.

Both were treated at Harborview Medical Center for cuts and bruises, then released.

There have been no arrests, and police have not yet determined if it will be handled as a bias crime. But the detective who handles bias crimes is investigating it.

The suspects were in a white BMW. Police described the three attackers as young and wearing brightly colored clothing. One was described as about 6 feet tall and wearing a white or gray sweater vest.

Crelia said he and Colonna were holding hands before the attack, but he's not sure if the car stopped because they were gay. "I don't know if it started as a hate crime, but I think it quickly escalated into one," he said.

The attack occurred a little more than a day after the King County Prosecutor's Office, working the Gay City Health Project, began putting up the posters in neighborhood businesses warning people of seven gay-bashing incidents last year, most of them in the neighborhood.

"It's disappointing," said Mike Logan, an assistant county prosecutor, who spearheaded the poster effort, said Monday. "I thought it was quieting down. But I guess it shows we're on the right track in warning people."

The posters include safety tips, advising gays and lesbians to not walk alone at night.

Crelia, though, wasn't walking alone, he said, and Olive Way was busy as bars were closing.

He's not sure what's behind the gay bashing incidents recently. More clubs in the neighborhood seem to be catering to a straight crowd, drawing more people who aren't comfortable around gays, he said.

But Crelia said he's not giving up on the neighborhood. "We just have to find a way to get it back to where it was."

February 1st Meeting Notes

Hey everyone,

So we had a good discussion at our last meeting regarding showing the movie Transamerica, myspace (our page), bowling, and collaborating with other clubs. We are planning on having a campus-wide event for the movie Transamerica TWICE on March 8th - once during the school day and then another time for the Shoreline First Friday of the Month Movie. There are quite a few members from the Shoreline community who go to the First Friday of the Month so it is a great opportunity to be involved. We'll talk more about showing Transamerica at our upcoming club meeting on Friday the 8th (like speakers, discussion, etc etc).

As a club event we are organizing a "Bowling Night" for February 22nd at either 1pm or 3pm. Since the Garage on Capitol Hill is 21+, we are thinking of going to a bowling alley nearby (like Spin Alley...). If anyone knows of a different place to bowl, speak up. Please ask off of work and plan on being there! It will be a great way for us to bond outside of the college. The bowling night time will be decided at the next meeting, so have an idea for either 1pm or 3pm in the afternoon (when you can make it) and be at the meeting.

Our myspace page will be opened to the public on March 1st, unless someone who is already a "myspace friend" already has an objection. I will be e-mailing each of the club members to get a consensus. I made the myspace page private because this club is anonymous - but I feel like myspace would be a great way to introduce our club to the Shoreline campus. If you are NOT a Project Pride myspace friend but ARE a club member and you object to making the myspace page public then please e-mail me (at shoreline.projectpride@gmail.com) or comment on this blog. We'll talk about it.

For our next meeting we are discussing the campus-wide showing of Transamerica, discussing collaborating with a club (which is really exciting), voting for new officer positions (more than you might think), deciding on a time to go bowling on the 22nd of February, and we're going to eat vegan cheesecake (no joke!).
